Last year was my first time at a music festival (we went to WayHome, just outside of Toronto) and I was completely unprepared for what to expect and what to wear! With festival season now in full swing and WayHome coming up in a few months (!!), I decided to spend more time preparing for what to wear when we go again this year. The great thing about music festivals is that anything goes; the hard part is making sure that you're dressing for yourself and not just trying to match everyone else.
TOPS: I tend to like for feminine and loose tops because I'm more comfortable in them, so I love these picks because they all have interesting details but are not overly revealing (except the last top -- that one is tiny but adorable!) and I know that I'd be comfortable throughout the day/night listening to music.
SHORTS: I always see people wearing skirts to music festivals, but in my experience, shorts are the best. You don't have to worry about how you're sitting, what you looking like when your dancing/jumping around, and they genuinely are just easier to wear.
GRAPHIC T'S: I'm not a massive graphic T fan, but if there's ever a time to wear one it's at a music festival. I'd probably go with the "Free Spirits" tee because it's low key, but if you have a favourite band, now is the time to pull it out of your closet and strut around with it on!!
CROSSBODY PURSE: Please do not be the person at the festival wearing a tote bag or a satchel. You want your hands free to be able to dance but nothing to heavy that's going to way you down. Try to find a crossbody purse that is a neutral colour (to match with everything else), isn't too heavy, and isn't too expensive -- you really don't want to spend a ton of money on a purse that is going to get dirty over the course of the festival.
BACKPACKS: Even more than a crossbody, I love having a backpack at a festival. You can carry so many more things and still be handsfree. Plus, with backpacks making a huge fashion comeback, there's never been a better time to have a few in your closet. Whether you go for a mini or a full size, look for something that you won't mind if it gets dirty but that you can wear again after the festival is done!
FOOTWEAR: On a regular day I definitely tend to overthink my footwear, but for festivals the rule is simple: wear whatever shoe is the most comfortable because you'll be standing all day! I prefer my Adidas sneakers (I've included them below) but some people are totally comfortable in sandals the whole time or booties. The options are endless, but here are some starting points if you're looking for sandals, booties, or sneakers!
At the end of the day, this is a MUSIC FESTIVAL, so wear what feels cool and comfortable for you! I'm a more modest dresser most of the time, and the following festival ideas definitely reflect that. So these are the things that I would wear to a festival and I hope this helps guide your festival wardrobe, but it's obviously not set in stone! Enjoy yourself, listen to as many bands as you can, and (if you're camping) enjoy the struggle of trying to stay clean while you get sweaty in a hot open space ;). I can't wait for WayHome to get here so that I can start packing my own festival wardrobe!
Are you going to any festivals this year? What's you're go-to festival style?

Growing up, my parents insisted on traveling as much as we could as a family so that my siblings and I could appreciate as much of the world as they could show us.
